1
Day 1: Yangon (D)
The former capital of Burma, Yangon – meaning ‘End of Strife’ – has been through tough times. Surviving protests, natural disasters and economic uncertainty, this city remains the commercial, historical and cultural heart of Burma. Soak up the unique atmosphere of this irrepressible city with dinner at a local restaurant.
2-4
Day 2-4: Yangon - Mandalay (B, L)
Explore one of the great sites of Burma – the legendary Shwedagon Pagoda. Dominated by glittering temples, Yangon is also home to a wealth of ancient relics, including eight strands of the Buddha Gautama’s hair, and attracts an extraordinary mix of monks, pilgrims, worshipers and tourists. Spend the morning taking in the history, spiritual significance and beauty of this ancient complex. Afterwards, catch a flight to Mandalay, Burma’s ‘Jewel City’ and savor the sights, sounds and flavors of this bustling metropolis. Set sale up-river to witness Mingun, poised to be the world’s largest pagoda, climb Mandalay Hill for spectacular sunset views, or explore the many sacred temples and shrines surrounding the city.
5-7
Day 5-7: Bagan (B, L)
Climb aboard a ferryboat (weather permitting) for a relaxing cruise down the majestic Ayeyarwaddy River. Sit back at the onboard restaurant and get a taste of rural Burma, observing the idyllic fishing villages dotting the riverbanks. Arrive in Bagan and experience one of the most impressive archaeological wonders of Asia. Explore the eerily silent surrounding plains, littered with more than 4000 structures bearing testament to a glorious past. Don’t miss mystical Mt Popa, an extinct volcano that is thought to house local spirits and deities. For energetic sorts, there is a chance to climb the 777 steps to the shrine at the top. Afterwards, return to Bagan and visit a nearby village to learn more about traditional culture while mingling with the friendly locals.
8-10
Day 8-10: Inle Lake (B, L)
Explore the watery world of Inle Lake – the lifeblood of many ethnic communities. Visit stilt-house villages and sample fresh produce from the floating gardens. Take an afternoon canoe ride to charming Lin Kin village, with an optional stopover to see how traditional delicacies are made. Travel by longtail boat to the Indein ruins and discover pagodas and stupas dating back to the eighth century, before visiting traditional tribal villages and getting a glimpse into local life and customs. Spend your last night in style and savour some culinary delights with a well-earned traditional Shan dinner.
11-12
Day 11-12: Mandalay (B)
Catch a morning flight back to Yangon and discover more of this beguiling city. Visit Sule Pagoda in the heart of downtown Yangon or acquire some local handicrafts at the nearby Bogyoke Market, a major bazaar known for its colonial architecture and winding cobblestone alleys. For a leisurely change of pace, perhaps indulge in high tea at the historic colonial hotel, The Strand. Relax after a day of exploring with dinner at one of the many restaurants – sit back on a balcony, watch the sun set over the glittering spires of Shwedagon Pagoda and enjoy the last night of this unforgettable Burmese adventure.
