The Cu Chi tunnels were used by Viet Cong soldiers as hiding spots during combat, as well as serving as communication and supply routes, hospitals, food and weapon caches and living quarters for numerous North Vietnamese fighters. The tunnel systems were of great importance to the Viet Cong in their resistance to American forces, and helped to counter the growing American military effort. Cu Chi has become a place of pilgrimage for Vietnamese school children and Communist Party cadres.
Our guide and driver will come to meet you at your hotel in Saigon around 8:30am and depart to Cu Chi Tunnels which is 70km North West of down town of Ho Chi Minh City. The Cu Chi Tunnels system was created around 1948 to assist Viet Minh in their combat against the French. Building continued for over 25 years until it was an underground city with living areas, kitchens, storage, weapons factories, field hospitals and command centers. During the American war the entire area of Cu Chi was designated as a free fire zone and was heavily bombarded. Since 1988, two sections of tunnels have been opened up for visitors. Return to your hotel around 3:00pm. End of your Cu Chi tunnels tour.
