Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary can be visited as a day trip from Siem Reap. The village is about an hour boat ride from where visitors embark from Siem Reap. A day tour from Siem Reap involves in an early morning pick up from your hotel around 5am with breakfast en route, ensuring that you are in the reserve around 8 am.
Head out to the outskirts of Siem Reap by car and arrive at the port. Then, set sail by boat for a journey across Tonle Sap Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. During the boat journey, learn a bit about the hydro-logical system and ecosystem that makes Tonle Sap one of the world’s most productive freshwater lakes, and enjoy a fresh picnic breakfast on board before arriving at Prek Toal Floating Village. Switch boats and then chug toward the nearby bird sanctuary, hidden within a flooded forest and boasting one of the most complex ecosystems in the region. Follow the lead of your expert ranger and keep your eyes up, where you might spot some of the sanctuary’s resident bird colonies. During certain times of the year, get the chance to also spy on the winged locals atop a tree-top platform!
Then, enjoy lunch at a community restaurant or, in low water season, on board your boat. Afterwards, get hands on with an environmental education class and a water hyacinth handicraft workshop before hopping on board a traditional Khmer paddle boat to learn about how the community here has adapted to their lake-faring existence. Explore the crocodile farms, fish farms, a floating school and a floating garden before heading back to Siem Reap.
