The Khmer Empire reached the zenith of its power, influence, and creativity from the 9th to the 13th centuries, when Angkor, the seat of the Khmer kings, was one of the largest capitals in Southeast Asia. Starting in the 15th century, the temples of Angkor’s heyday were abandoned until their “discovery” in the early 1860s by French naturalist Henri Mouhot (the Cambodians living there sure knew about them). In all, there are some 300 monuments reflecting Hindu and Buddhist influence scattered throughout the jungle, but only the largest have been excavated and only a few of those reconstructed.
A one-day private classic tour of Angkor Wat and other important temples and ruins surrounding Siem Reap. The day begins at the South Gate of Angkor Thom, where you’ll begin your exploration of the centerpiece of this ancient city, the Bayon. The Bayon holds 54 towers decorated with more than 200 enigmatically smiling stone faces. The morning tour also visits the Royal Enclosure, Phimeanakas, the Terrace of Elephants and Terrace of Leper Kings, as well as Ta Prohm Temple, made famous by the movie Tomb Raider. Afterwards, enjoy a relaxed lunch in Siem Reap before heading to the famous Angkor Wat – best preserved of all the Angkor temples. Time is allowed for a thorough exploration of this huge architectural wonder before climbing to the top of ancient Pre Rup temple to watch the sunset over the jungle.
